No collision with Cervinia anymore...

I guess because people first ask "did you find your bag?" before they say hello... LOL

Hi everybody,

as many of you know, after my last run in Vars the bag handed over to the sherpas never appeared again.
I please ask you, especially the big teams with their own sherpas (France, Czech republic, the swedish did already) to double check in their cars if the bag is around.
The bag dissappeared Wednesday after the firts run.
This is my bag:

Thanks

Hi Dr Bullet
Thanks for your words. It is exactly what I was thinking. Don’t get me wrong: I think it would be great to have a week before WSC to train in Vars and I support it. But this won’t make a big difference for me, because I would not attend anyway. Given my job it is very difficult for me to get 1 week for speed skiing and I will use it for the WSC week. I am already preparing my schedule for 2009 I have to make a choice Finland Sweden or Italy. I can only do one. I guess I am one of many speed skiers in this situation.
Honestly I think currently Speed Skiing is organized for the top pro racers and that’s it. I heard there was a time when 2-day races happened during weekends. The track in Les arcs was constantly open for training. Actually I decided to start speed skiing because I was able to train in Les Arcs: 6 runs in 1 day! Since then I only had chance to speedski in races. No chance to train. Unfortunately I am not in great speed ski countries like Sweden and Finland where speed ski training is program. But for me it would be enough to know that I can spent 2 or 3 weekends in les Arcs doing one run after the other the whole day. It would be enough for me if I could start from just the middle of the track. Unfortunately it looks like we are not getting even that in les arcs in the next 4 years...
I hope we can at least use the track in Vars for the days after the WSC for training…
Ski slo… eh fast!

Hi guys,

I understand your concerns. Just fyi this is my situation every year. No training and speed up to 200kmh in 3 runs.
Yahoooooo!!

Looks like this year my competitors have same conditions as I usually have.

BTW: Have a look at this!!

Is there still somebody out there that believes these races are goin' to happen??

Why should a phantom organization announce the phantom cancellation of a phantom race??

see you all in Hundfjället.
(I heard in Sweden there is an organization that cares about the racers' concerns and needs)

Que cojones...

Is it at least possible to give a date when a final decision will be communicated?

Some questions (probably meaningless for 2008)
- What is the the position of Club de Sport de Les Arcs?
- Who would organize the Speed Masters race 2008 in Les Arcs?
- Who is the main contact for all matters related to the Speed masters race 2008 in Les Arcs?
- When are elections in Bourg St Maurice?

It would be good if somebody from FSV (eg Stephane) would make an official communiqué about the races in Les Arcs 2008.

Thanks

Hi Finland team!

Kimi Räikkonen is a fair F1 champion!
Kimi deserves this F1 title. After this year's incredible farce at McLaren, this was the only fair thing to happen.
Hope we soon have also a finish-spanish fight in speed ski

Tipis!

Thanks Jukka.

so what we see as that even strict official standards may not be enough for some medicals, so what about home made stuff..?

And I agree with Ville one of the things that attracts me in Speed Ski is the technology part.
btw: what will we tell the people if one day Harry breaks the record with big Red Bull party and his EMMA? Think about it.
The first to answer was Martin (he send me an email).
So it looks like we will have a nice beer round with Austria, Finland and Spain.

I did not want to write anything to this, but finally as you ask I'll add my 2 cents.

First: The following is not supposed to be a critic on any conversations about new helmet or new safety rules that may be ongoing!

I think everything that increases safety is good, but by minimizing
the impact on the core spirit of the speed ski competition.
We love Speed Ski because it is dangerous, but we are not stupid.

I think we could already gain a lot if we would just really ENFORCE
the current rules. And I mean EVERYBODY involved in Speed Ski race:
TDs, Race Comittees, racers, team captains, experienced racers, rookies, etc

Just some questions, I ask myself (and maybe you want to ask yourself):
- Is still somebody checking the covering clothes at the telecabin?
- Who is responsible for checking the skiing level of the speed skiers
and I am just talking about the skills to ski through a steep mogul field,
maybe the team captains?.
- Is the starting phase safe enough? In Verbier we saw ropes and crampons
at the start. I have to admit: It looked weird and somebody may ask if this was still ok, but it was definitely safer.
- do we (race org AND racers) really check effectivly our equipment?
- Does the personal know how to check equipment?
In the FIS Worldchampionship the TD checking my back protector had no idea
what CE Norm EN1621-2 is.
- Are the cuts adequate enough?
The Verbier final run was questionable,
but only the BEST 15 Speed skiers of the world were allowed to start.
This was also SAFETY.
- RACERS: do we accept the decisions of the jury or do we prefer to put pressure on the race comittee
to start from higher or in dangerous conditions (ignoring risks for OTHERS)
- BEGINNERS and SLOWER RACERS: do we always accept that we did not pass a cut or do
we try to convince the jury to let us start at least as forerunner?
- RACE JURY: are you able to accept the responsability of LEADING a speed ski race
and stay with your decisions or do you prefer to ask the racers when you start hesitating.
REMEMBER: THE FINAL DECISION AND RESPONSABILITY IS STILL YOURS!

Final question to every Speed Skier:
Do you know your own "accident coefficient"?

Definition:

accident coefficient = damage * risk (probability of accident)

The better skier you are, the lower the damage, the lower the risk, the lower your accident coefficient.
My recommendation: Start only if your accident coefficient is ACCEPTABLE for you!

Putting it into words:
Could you live with the possible bad consequences of an accident?
According to you accident coefficient what would this most probably be?
a black and blue ass? burns? or a concusion? or a broken arm? or broken legs? or invalidity? or brain damage? or maybe death...?

If you answer YES and START you are a SPEED SKIER.
If you answer NO and dont START you are what we normally would define as a "normal human beiing".
If you answer NO and START you are just an IDIOT!

Help make Speed Ski great and thrilling, ok, make it safe, but please don't strangle it.

If you were able to read to here:
Can you explain "CE EN1621-2"?
The first 3 that answer my question get a free beer next time we meet!

Cant wait to meet you all again!

Enjoy the summer and stay fast!

I met Caitlin for the first time at the captains meeting in Bad Mitterndorf.
It was a quiet odd situation: She was there to translate into french to the swiss-french speaking british team captain what was discussed. In the end Caitlin became the de facto British captain.
I was impressed by her self confidence wondering who was this person with such security as if she had been part of the circuit for quiet some time.
The next time I met Caitlin was during the days of the fatal race. She used to walk into my appartement with her little dog, we had dinner at the Latino Loco together with other speed skiers as usual.
I spent the last hours with her since she was sitting beside me in the racers area.
She was always distributing good mood, sympathy and fun. It seemed like life was easy for her. She shared these feelings with everybody around her and this was good.
I can still hear her voice with her favorite ending word "..., darling!"
Horrible moments for every speed skier. An unvisible hand comes out of this black hole left of the KL track. Slowly and without break it pulls Speed Skiers into the deep. "Just jump, find a fast line through the mogul field!... damn 240 skis, damn fairings, damn KL suite!"
Caitlin, please never let this ever happen again!
Tim, Marc, Chris, Anna-Karin, Elena, Tracie and many others: I have never been so close to you. It makes me feel sad, but in some way it also makes me feel good.

Next time I pass the timing area next to the black hole I'll say "Hi Marco, hi Caitlin, darling, nice to meet you again!"

¡Marco, Caitlin, hasta siempre!
